8 Months Old

28 Mar

Dear Benjamin–

You are eight months old… well if I’m being honest, you are eight months and a week.  You ushered in eight months with pink eye and your brother punctuated the exclamation point on our celebration with a never ending GI bug.  Let’s just say that it wasn’t a very photogenic time in our household.

But you, little stinker, are nearly always photogenic these days — so wide eyed and appreciative of the world around you.  At eight months old, you are most certainly not interested in merely sitting still and smiling back at us.  You want nothing more than to move, but there’s a problem: you aren’t really on the move.  You just want to so fiercely that you practically will yourself forward with sheer determination and grit of your teeth.  You wiggle and worm.  You inch and whine and cry with frustration.  You twist around and arch your back.  And after all the wiggling, twisting, fussing and fighting … more often than not, you’ve gotten yourself over to whatever it is you desire.  It’s definitely not pretty or elegant, but it’s scrappy, determined, willful… three characteristics I’d pick any day over pretty or elegant.

Your Daddy says that you are always looking for the next best thing.  You fuss and cry to be picked up, but that only satisfies your wanderlust for a second.  Moments later, you are arching and twisting, throwing your arms forward to try and grab the phone off the counter, or the toy your brother is holding. Rinse repeat.  If we pick you up, you are sure there is something more fabulous to be found on the ground – likely a tiny scrap of paper or thread that only your chubby little eight month old fingers can grasp and quickly try to ferret into your mouth before thwarted.

You are a big eater these days.  You love lunch and dinner time and house your bowls of food in mere minutes, and would be much happier to eat solids than drink bottles.  You’ve even gone out on a big limb recently and consumed carrots without screaming like someone was pinching you.  But, the big favorites are still peas, squash and pears.  You regularly have fruit for lunch — some combination of 1, 2 or 3 of the following: apples, pears, peaches, blueberries, mango, prunes and bananas.  It’s always veggies for dinner — green beans, butternut squash, acorn squash, peas, carrots or sweet potatoes.  You have a hardcore crush on baby puffs and mum mums, and regularly give me heart stopping moments during dinner while choking on the fistful of puffs you recently shoved into your mouth.  We are starting to give you hunks and bits of things to play with while we eat — diced up peaches, peas, pancakes — and I’m excited to try more of this in the coming months.

You’ve entered the teachable hand gesture phase of baby-hood, and it’s been a blast.  You sign “more” with great precision and think clapping is pretty amazing.  There has been some forward progress towards waving, but I’m not quite ready to say you are a proactive waver at this point.  It’s time for us to start incorporating more signs and fun games with hand movements into your day, and I think you’ll love it.  It’s always a high point in my day to watch you beam when we clap and say “yay, Benjamin!”  You love to give yourself a big round of applause.

Benny baby boy… eight months have gone so, so fast. You are delightful, and we are in love.

I love you every day.
Your Mama
