Daddy’s Birthday

17 Oct

Birthdays are still a bit of a vague concept for Lucas.  He’s very, very excited about them, and extremely eager for his, but really has no concept of time passing, growing older, age, etc… He can’t confidently answer how old he is, but he can confidently exclaim with glee over the possibility of cake when someone celebrates a birthday.

Needless to say, he welcomed Tim’s last birthday with great anticipation.

However, in an effort to teach a lesson in “giving” rather than just “getting,” I instituted a new birthday tradition.  We headed off to the local Dollar Store and I explained that Lucas would be able to pick out four things for Daddy’s birthday.  I instructed him to find the four things that he knew Daddy would love most of all, and that we would pay for them and give them to Daddy for his birthday.

He took his job seriously — wandering the aisles with great consideration and spending quite a bit of time debating over which four presents he’d pick out for Tim.  Several times, he’d return an item to the shelf in favor of a new find.

He ended up settling on the following:

1) A stuffed cat carrying a fish — he described it as “a great thing” and repeatedly assured me that “Daddy will want to sleep with it.”

2) An orange ball with a picture of an orange on it — he was sure Tim would love this because “Daddy likes to give me oranges.”

3) A football — as soon as I mentioned getting presents for Daddy, he told me that he would be getting him a football, because “Daddy likes to watch it, and play it with me.” Thankfully, the dollar store did not disappoint and we were able to find a football.

4) Red monster truck — he didn’t have a specific reason for this, and looked at me rather annoyed when I kept asking.  I guess his response was “duh, because it’s a red monster truck. Enough said.”

And while I haven’t found the stuffed cat in our bed just yet (thankfully), I think Tim appreciated the thought that went into Lucas’ presents!
