Always listening…

16 Sep

Lucas is always listening these days.  Of course, it is selective listening at its best.  Ask him to clean up his toys, go upstairs for a bath or be patient and you will promptly be ignored with no sign of cognition whatsoever.  But, rest assured, he hears you.

Two great examples from this weekend:

We ate dinner out on Saturday night and ordered their “mini desserts” to go.  I was careful to order the desserts without specifically saying their names – sure that any mention of cookie or brownie would ignite a slew of demands from the toddler across the table.  Clearly the waitress didn’t get the memo. When she arrived back at our table, Lucas was paying her no attention.  He had an enormous amount of interest in staring underneath the table — mostly because we had asked him not to get under there 4,327 times already during dinner.  Yet, when she told us that everything was packed up and she put the ice cream separate from the dessert, it took less than 2 seconds for little stuff to pipe up with an excited, “dere is ice cream in dat bag!” shout.  Assuredly, if she had told us the broccoli was separate, there would have been silence from the peanut gallery.

Even better, on our way out of Target, I said something snippy to Tim.  And without ado, Lucas pipes up and says, “Daddy, I think Mommy gonna put you in time out.”
