The Boy Next Door…

6 Jun

My child is obsessed with the boy next door.

He’s three years older than Lucas, and you can tell it is a serious case of hero worship.  To a certain extent, it’s a two way street.  The boy next door digs my kid too.  They are always eager playmates and they play nicely together.  But, there is a very established leader and an entrenched follower.  Guess which one Luke is?  Yup, the zombie-eyed follower who would fling himself off a cliff at the mere suggestion from his older friend.

Here’s a glimpse from last night.  We had just finished eating on the patio and the neighbors came outside to start their dinner.  The little boy hollers out “Hi Lucas!” Luke lights up like the Vegas strip and promptly returns the hello before looking at us and exclaiming, “It’s him!  He said hi to me!” And then he teetered on the edge of the patio steps and shouted out “Are you my friend?  I like you!”

RunningInGrassI’m hoping that, with a bit more time and exposure, our little guy will shake off blatant following and stand on his own two feet a bit more.  But until then, I’m reminding myself that it is only a matter of time before the boy next door realizes that it isn’t very “cool” to play with someone three years your junior, and we should be thankful for all the happiness he brings our little lemming.
