Little Things

5 Mar

After reading Goodnight Moon each night, we say our “night nights” to the things around our room.  Luke waves goodnight to the monkey in the picture, monkey on the bookshelf, monkey on the curtains and monkey on the wall.  We are sure to acknowledge the ceiling fan and wish it a pleasant night sleep.  We also say g’night to our friends and teachers at school, the day of the week, to grandparents, Tali and Daddy, and finally to Mama.

For months we’ve recited the same night nights – the waves have gotten more vigorous, the anticipation of the next goodnight item more intense, but just in the past two weeks has the goodnight to me become exceedingly special.  When I say, “goodnight Mama,” Luke promptly twists his body, pats my shoulder and lays his head down on my chest.

And, I inhale his baby smell and wish desperately for that magical pause button that will give me just one more minute of this sweetness.
